Default CB Antenna Mounting Question and RSS

Hey Guys,

Got a quick question about how you all mounted your CB antenna. Mine is mounted on the spare tire mount. It sticks out above the roofline about a foot. I checked it with a SWR meter and am in the red on all channels (1, 19 and 40). This typically indicates a short or something in the cable. I did some troubleshooting and found that the cable is fine. I checked an all in one radio shack antenna and it worked well on the roof. When I took the antennae off the spare mount and held it up on the roof rack, the SWR meter read perfect. So the question is, do I need to worry about damage to the CB if I keep the antenna on the spare mount? Also, do any of you guys have this problem?

On a side note, I had this forum on my Yahoo page through RSS. Anyone else having issues seing the content?

Thanks for the help!

Never had that problem with my CB before on any of my vehicles. I would make sure your getting a good ground and if need be they make antennas with a seperate ground wire. If you keep running the radio like that its not gonna last very long or work very well either, unless you have a Galaxy radio (they will automatically compensate for bad SWR). I have my antenna on my spare tire mount also but it reads the same swr on the roof or the spare tire mount

I would say your CB will not handle that sort of load and will fail with much use.

Can you tell me what kind of antenna, length and mount type you are using? I am about to purchase and install a CB in my 2003 disco

How long is your antenna? You may not be far enough above the roofline. I use a 4' Wilson fiberglass antenna with a matched 18ft Wilson coax and haven't had a problem in the roughly 2 years it's been installed.
