Default Center Differential Lock - 2000 Disco II

I have a 2000 Disco II with the appropriate parts in the Center Differential to turn it into a Locking Differential with the appropriate linkage and shifter mechanism.

I am aware that Ashcroft makes an aftermarket linkage and shifter mechanism that will bolt right up with a few modifications to the Transmission Tunnel pan cover to accommodate the shifter motion necessary to engage the CDL.

Are there any other options besides spending ~ $500 on the Ashcroft unit? Where there any Disco II's that had the appropriate linkage and shifter that I could try to source the part through a salvage yard at a reduced cost?

Jeff

Sure, use a shifter assembly from a D1 that bolts right up, costing you around $150.

I just did this last week. Installing the lever is not hard. No one told me it directly bolted into the top of the transmission. (Two different lenght bolts). Just figured that one out. i would suggest cutting the hole big enough so the top shifter bolts do not touch the metal plate to the trans tunnel. it causes vibration and extra noise. I would also add some more foam back to the hole you cut to help deaden road noise. I have to go back in and do this. I found some Dynomat.
If the bolts on the top of the D1 shifter touch that place they make your console vibrate, because there is a direct connection to your transmission. As before you only had a cable so it did not transmit noise and vibration.
There are really no clear instructions on this setup you kinda have to figure it out yourself. But not hard if you are a mechanical intuitive person.

Get in good with a salvage yard with a 2004 D2 on their lot. I got my '04 shifter with linkage, cables, CDL spigot, handle and boot for $150 + shipping
