Default Centering ball require greasing?

I just recently rebuilt the front and rear proshafts on my 03 DII. Anyone know how you keep the centering ball(Precision 617) greased if it doesn't contain a needle point?...or does it even require greasing? I've seen other posts claiming that other rebuilt shafts being sold on this site contain a needle point for greasing.

Thx!

Richie

The 617 is not designed to be greased. Usually a parts store can cross reference to one with a zerk but they usually don't.
So, no, it can't be greased.

Ths for the response Mike. Should the 617 last just as long as the OEM ball? (in my case, 90k miles?)

Its not going to. Just inspected my spare shaft. The cup holding the centering ball has a huge crack. The only way that would happen, would be the heat getting to it. 35 pound paper weight.

Rich, there is no reason it should not last more then the OEM as long as you are greasing your u-joints. When not greased, the u-joints are the normal cause of the centering ball to fail.

ok, Thx Mike. the recent post ("centering ball failed after 7 months because it was not greased") by 2rovers had me a little concerned but i trust your judgment. Thx for what you do on this forum!

Anything mechanical can fail, it is the nature of the beast.
