There is nothing in the key that registers with the vehicle to make it run. The key can be completely mechanical and still function normally, including disabling the alarm.
If your original key remote does not work, new keys can be programmed to work with the existing system. Swapping the fob recognition may not be as simple as changing the RF unit, which I believe is behind the overhead liner near the rear view mirror

ok. kit complete for change in my disco 2 03.........the parts were changed and it started without incident. I took a long trip to the beach and a good day. thanks for your comments
