Im sure it possible but why would you want to? The 4.6 is a major upgrade over the 4.0.

Actually, I have both and prefer the 4.0. Could also be asking because of an engine replacement and 4.6s not being as widely available as 4.0s.

That being said, it's possible for sure - but someone can chime in to correct me - the frames are different. I'm not 100% confident what makes them different, but I think it has to do with the mounting location of the transmission and maybe some other mounting points in the engine bay.

Not when your 4.6 is about to blow up

Engine mounts are exactly the same but I am not sure about transmission - but it is not likely to be a major issue.

Havent had issues with mine knock on wood. Hoping for many more trouble free miles. 😂

Aren’t the blocks the same? Changing a GEMS to a Bosch is a bit more work.

blocks are the same but the earlier 4.0s seem to be built to tighter tolerances and as the d2 production continued on they didn't replace the tooling as the LR3 was set to debut. I haven't seen or heard the 99 or 00s have near the liner issues that 03/04s did...maybe that's not provable but it is a narrative that's been suggested here on numerous occasions. If you had time and wanted a project, take a 4.0 block from a 99 and swap in 4.6 bits with a fresh cam and enjoy. If we could tune the these easier then these motors would really benefit from head/intake/exhaust work but having to ship an ecu to the UK as the only option makes that extra money probably not worth going down that rabbit hole.
