That being said, it's possible for sure - but someone can chime in to correct me - the frames are different. I'm not 100% confident what makes them different, but I think it has to do with the mounting location of the transmission and maybe some other mounting points in the engine bay.

blocks are the same but the earlier 4.0s seem to be built to tighter tolerances and as the d2 production continued on they didn't replace the tooling as the LR3 was set to debut. I haven't seen or heard the 99 or 00s have near the liner issues that 03/04s did...maybe that's not provable but it is a narrative that's been suggested here on numerous occasions. If you had time and wanted a project, take a 4.0 block from a 99 and swap in 4.6 bits with a fresh cam and enjoy. If we could tune the these easier then these motors would really benefit from head/intake/exhaust work but having to ship an ecu to the UK as the only option makes that extra money probably not worth going down that rabbit hole.
