Default Changed T-Case fluid & seal, got a fuzzy magnet!

I had a very small leak from the transfer case so I changed the fluid and seal. After dropping out the drain plug here's what she looked like:

Is this what should be expected after 152k miles? I doubt it's ever been changed and the fluid was VERY low, thank God I changed it when I did!

I didn't see and visible problems with the gears:

Anyone else get fluffy magnets like this? Anything else I should look for before I seal her back up?

I would say that is pretty much the norm especially if it is the only time you have ever changed it. If not the only time, probably not a problem either. But I will let others with more diff experience chime in and give you some more opinions.

Thanks, I just bought the D2 a couple of months ago. I'm fairly certain this is the first time it's been changed.

Some 85W150 gear oil would be good.

And with your mileage, change the t/case and both diffs every 20,000 miles, it is not as new as it used to be.

Yup, I bought the 85w/140 but I think it'll do.

Good idea. I wasn't planning on doing the transfer case but I noticed it looked like it was leaking while I was changing the transmission fluid. I guess since it'll be on the stands for the next day while the transfer case seal cures, I might as well do the diffs, what's the spec on the diff fluid for a D2?

You might want to go to my major service list posted at the top of this section and do it all, especially the front drive shaft before it fails and takes out your tranny.

I've read that Mike and it's excellent. Thank you for posting. I bought my D2 just after the head gaskets and the entire cooling system were replaced. The guy sold it to me thinking he was getting one over on me because it leaked so much oil!! Which he never told me but hey, after one bottle of White Sheppards and thanks to this forum, the idiot sold me a great 2001 D2 for $3500.

The drive shaft is constantly on my mind thanks to you kind folks but I've inspected it over and over. Removed the plug and screwed in the nipple to grease the front of the shaft. Obviously the front ujoints, rear, and rear shaft are greased. I know its the hookes joint area that fails but I'm unable to detect any physical or visual concern when examining it so I've been rolling the dice... It's not my daily driver and I've just been plucking away at the "write ups" list instead of the major service because most of the easy stuff was done.

Anyway, today was supposed to be the tranny fluid which turned into that plus the transfer case, seal, and now diff front and rear.

And guess what?!? My rear diff drain plug was a FUZZY MAGNET too!

Doing the front diff next and then I'm done with this car for the weekend at least!! Suspension is next..
