Default Changing Exaust/De-Catting?

Hey guys(and girls)-I've recently dumped mundane amounts of money into my Disco(almost 5 grand in the past 6 months) and just recently had my head gasket replaced which also meant getting the block machined, new starter, and plugs and wires...So since I'm already tearing apart this truck piece by piece, why not mess with the terrible stock exhaust. Not really concerned about the 10-15 HP I COULD gain from a "free flowing exuast" as some places claim. But rather just care about the sound. The current sound my stock system makes is very whiny and to quiet for my taste unless I really mash it. I've looked around and saw some people have straight piped it from the cat back? and some people have taken the cats off completely and just lived with the CEL or put a resistor in? not sure which route to take. I don't have to pass any emission testing(living in FL is great sometimes) but Ive seen that taking off the cats, silencer, muffler, etc causes it to flow TO freely and hurts the engine rather than help? what do you guys think..PS-not trying to break the bank here. Just want something simple

What happens when you take the truck for an annual test? in the UK they have lists of vehicles that should have DPF's or CAT's and if they are removed at the MOT it automatically fails.

Requirements vary by state; they're not consistent across the country. My understanding is that Florida doesn't require testing of any emissions components at all -- including whether or not they're even still installed on the vehicle.

Jesse's post linked by Daedrix is very helpful. I also have a post of my own you can find here (https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...36/#post557435) which has lots of pictures.

As far as exhaust goes on a Disco, I've had about every combo out there. Flowmaster 40, true dual Jones glasspacks, single Thrush glasspack, Borla with magnaflow cats, stock with no cats, Flowmaster with a glasspack behind, Flowmaster with the resonator behind, and now the one that's my favorite yet which is what's in the post there. I feel like I'm forgetting a few permutations it went through, but if you've got any questions not answered by that post then I'd be happy to answer them.

Maybe you could help me with what would be the best option for my truck. At this moment I don't want to mess with the headers. But anything other than that is free game. I was thinking maybe just rip everything out behind the cat and putting in a flomaster 44 Or a high flow cat and straight piping it. I don't mind if its to loud and I don't have to pass any inspections so its pretty easy in that aspect. However I don't want to run now cats and have to worry about the engine running to rich and sending out codes..What do you think?

I love the tone of a Magnaflow muffler, and resonator delete. It sounds quiet when you want it to, but step on the gas and it sounds great. 35-55MPH has a great V8 sound now. Extremely happy with that setup.

If you want to delete the cats then use the O2 spacer that both I and Jesse used in our write UPS. That way it wont throw any codes or run rich.

I will tell you, the Flowmaster 40 with cats has the most awful drone you've ever heard. Gave me a headache and killed any chance of a conversation with passengers, and that's with extensive sound dampening throughout the truck. The 44 is a similar muffler and combine that with no cats... Well I wouldn't run it.

Jessee seems pretty pleased with his 70 series. If you want Flowmaster, I wouldn't go below a 60 series at least.

A Borla Pro XS isn't too expensive and the quality is superb. You can get one on amazon for $100-$120, and the quality and sound is like no other. You'll have to look up the part # through the Borla website if you go that route. You'll want an offset 2.5" diam pipe model. That's true for anything you choose.

Magnaflow has gotten good reviews. Its pretty much the only one I haven't tried, but others who have seem to like it. Up to you.

In the end, its up to preference as far as sound goes. I'm partial to Borla, partial against Flowmaster just because so many people have them. I think they sound fine, its just not my sound.

If you really want to go cheap, just throw on a thrush turbo muffler. That should give you decent sound and they're pretty cheap.

Now, if you really do want to go loud... Only leave the resonator. Delete the muffler and the cats. That would give it a really throaty sound for cheap. If you don't want it too loud, id leave the resonator with any of the suggested setups. If you decide its not loud enough then you can cut it out, but that's a lot easier than cutting it out and deciding you wish it were more quiet.

Same in Texas. Heavily populated counties like Dallas require emissions test. A few miles away, in rural counties, no emissions test at all. Pollute all you like. I know it doesn't help the global air quality, but that's the law here.
