Default Changing Spark Plug Wires Disco II

Posted: Sat Jul 27 2013, 10:20PM
A couple of days ago I decided to change both motor mounts on the Disco II that had broke. 4 bolts total how bad can it be. Jacked up engine and made sure no hose or wires where being crimped or squashed. Got both off with no problem but before I proceeded with putting the new ones I decided to slowly lower the engine without the motor mount to see if it will give enough clearance to change the spark plug wires from the coil pack. Sure enough I could easily get my hands back there.

I didn't need new wires but in case I do need in the future I will go this route. Hope this helps for those that have to do wires in the near future.

If it works, great. So all of this with exhausts hooked up, etc.? Bet you could also do a fuel pressure test more easily as well.

For those who have not had the pleasure, here is a view from the rear.

Yes exhaust was still hooked up, I just lowered it without the old engine mount and used a bottle jack. I lowered it slowly and carefully just enough to get my hands to the coils.

You did not also have to undo the tranny mounts? Do you have SAI??

Also, has anyone simply found a different place to mount the coil packs that don't require either lowering the engine or removing the top end to access? I would happily buy universal wires for the life of the vehicle if I did not have to deal with the current set-up.

Its not that bad really. Or worth the hassle of relocating. 6 bolts hold the intake down and disconnecting the various hoses is pretty simple.

Then you don't have SAI

I do but the sai is held on by a combination of 6 small bolts and some hoses, its all very easy to work around. I know having the coil packs up top would make it easier but in there current location they are protected from water when fording and how often do you actually change plugs? 60k miles/ 5 years? Its not too bad.

More power to ya if the SAI doesn't make you turn "rover" into a 4-letter word! I've taken the top end off just for coil packs/wires 3 times (once was just to inspect the valley for oil leaks) this year. The SAI stuff was enough to get my blood pressure in the red! I ditched 2/4 bolts that hold the packs on because it made them easier to remove.
