I have done the fluid multiple times on the 00, but the filter on that was done right before I bought it so I didn't have to do that. As far as I could tell on the new 04, it has not been done, and she has 76K. I picked up the AB kit and plan on doing it this evening.
Any tips/tricks or advice? Seems many things are not as straightforward as the Rave suggests. I didn't see much in the search on it, but just looking for issues with any bolts in particular, tips for the gasket, tips for taking out/putting in the filter, etc.
Also, I might do the diffs tonight as well time permitting. I used the M1 75W 140 in the last rig, but I'm wondering if that is overkill and not as good in the cold climate (considering I use this as a ski truck mostly). No plans on towing with this. Should I just stick with the M1 75W/90?

In changing the transmission fluid, I would pull the drain plug tonight and pull the pan off in the morning. That way it won't drip all over you while you change the filter.

 

Plenty of threads on the board on this and reiterating the sequence from the rave on cycling through gears between top-offs. Some suggest doing the fluid change twice in order to get at least 3/4 of the old stuff out. Makes sense, but to quote Sweet Brown: ain't nobody got time for that.

My $0.02:

I agree with the loosen-the-fill-bolt-first philosophy. Be a real bummer to drain half your fluid only to discover you can't replenish it...

Lube the new o-rings and gasket...

I had a brief shutter in sport mode when shifting to top gear. So I tried Lubegard 60902 and it has helped, and I rarely subscribe to the "snake oil" mentality. I also dumped a couple quarts of fluid in the pan before bolting it up (carefully) because pumping it in is kind of a pain. So two less quarts of pumping to deal with...

On the filter, one bolt is longer than the other two, the longer one holds the tube in place. Make sure you take note and put the long one back in the proper hole.

Don't ask me how I know this.

 

There should also be a magnite stuck to the bottom of the inside of the pan. It will be pretty messy around it, so you'll want to take some time to clean it up pretty well.

 

I used a waterbed pump when I did my trannie, tf case and my diffs. It worked amazing even with the thick fluid. Just clean the pan and magnet well and it is really straightforward. I added a bottle of Lucas to mine as Mike suggests. I went with a 140 in the diffs and t case as well. I am in a warmer climate but one would thing thicker is better...

 

All went smooth, thanks all. I've done the fluid a bunch on the other Disco, but never a filter. Only pain was 2 of the bolts going back on as I could not get the torque wrench in there great.
Everything looked clean and nice...even the pan was clean inside. The front diff was a different story though.... just posted on that.
