Default Check Engine Light P1481

Hey Guys,

Having this engine code and can't find much info on it: P1481. The description that comes with it is "Fan Secondary Low With High Fan On ". I noticed that the electric fan wasn't spinning freely as well and the engine is running a bit hot as well at times. Do you think this may be the culprit? I think my next step is to run 12v from the battery directly to the fan to see if I can get it turning if it doesn't it mat be seized and need replacing.

Thanks for any input.

The electric fan doesn't come on until 210 degrees F.

If you jump pin 85 to pin 87 (not 87a) of Relay #4, or any 12v source to pin 87 for that matter, the cooling fan should come on.

I just checked the 40A fuse for the fan and it is blown.

Possibly due to a high amp draw of a dying fan that resists turning smoothly.

Do I need to replace 40A fuse before doing this?

Yes, and it's a good idea to jump 85 to 87 as opposed to using voltage from elsewhere. By pulling out the relay cube and jumping its pins you will still be going through the fuse. If it blows immediately then your fan is toast. If the fan spins you may be able to take it apart and lube it (maybe, I've never done this to a Rover). Or you can go with it and see how long it lasts before the fuse blows again.

Awesome, thanks for the tip. Do you have a circuit diagram? How can I identify which terminals are 86 and 85?

Thanks again.

check your relay first: It's 30 + 87 on mine. 87 and "x" are the pins with the ' _/ _ ' image.
