Default Code reader, manually

I am refusing to pay LR 170 dollars to plug in a code reader, so I am looking up to see if there is a way to bypass the system and read the error codes manually for ABS. I have the ABS light trio on and I have driven in snow and felt the abs working so I believe I may have a bad sensor, but I don't know for sure. So, either I go and buy a front and a rear sensor and test it out and send back whatever I don't use, I am trying to narrow it down. Anyone have any ideas?

It can not be done at all. You have to use a test book or AutoLogic scanner to read the codes for the ABS.
So you have your 3 lights on, are you running factory pads or aftermarket, are your brakes squeaking alot and have alot of wheel dust?
Is your ABS and t/c still working?

When stopping in snow, the abs is still pumping the brakes. The TC is not working properly. It is not shifting from the wheels that are slipping.

When you say your t/c is not working properly, how familiar are you with it's operation and have you tried it off road? T/C either works or it doesn't, that is why I am asking.
What were you doing when the trio came on? Are your brakes aftermarket? How long has it been since you changed your barke fluid? All these things can cause the system to throw a code.

The trio came on about a year ago. I took it to the dealer and was told that the modulator needs to be replaced. I purchased a used modulator online and had it installed. All lights went off and it worked properly. About 2-3 months after it was installed, the lights came back on when driving down the highway. I haven't had this vehicle off roading in over a year. I am somewhat familiar with how the TC works. I have had it in the mud and watch the light come on and could feel the TC kicking in. Now, the wheels just spin and the TC won't kick in.
Not sure if the garage changed the brake fluid when they initially tested the ABS modulator. What is the recommended fluid? I could do the flush.
I did just have aftermarket pads put on the rear tires, which I now know that they aren't recommended, very noisy and that I could have done myself(just got the service manual on cd), but the lights were on before they were installed.

It may not be the pads, as long as they aar good quality pads, with a good coating of sound deadening amterial on them and they don't squeak, you should be OK with them. Many times the trio will come on because of a wheel sensor that has bee knocked loose causing it to become dirty and not send good signals to the ECU.
One way or the other, you should find some small shop that can read your codes and help you resolve this.
