Default Procedure to manually engage CDL?

I have a 2000 DII and would like to engage the CDL for offroading. I do not have the CDL shifter. Would someone tell me the proper procedure for climbing under the truck and engaging it? Do I have to put the tranny and tcase in neutral before I turn the bolt? Thanks for the help.

Remember it is for off road only, it will cause your 3 Amigos to come on but they will go off when disengaged.
Do you know where the shift nipple is, if so turn it with a wrench clock wise as far as it will go, you are the locked up.
To disengage, turn it all the way counter clockwise and restart your engine.

Just crawl under your truck with a 10mm wrench under the passenger side. I stick my arm between the driveshaft and transmittion and follow it to the transfer case. You will be able to feel the nipple and turn it clockwise to engage it. I leave the truck in park and it doesn't matter if you are in low or high range. I also have the truck started when I do it so I still have the traction contol and abs. After you do it a couple of times it doesn't take more than a minute to do.

You will only have ABS, T/C and H/D as long as you don't stop and then restart your engine, then the trio will come on till disengaged.

There are aftermarket shifters you can install also. They replace your high/low shifter. Forward/back does high/low and left/right actuates the CDL.

Just a small note,

as stated you turn it clockwise, BUT this is generally as viewed from above, if your laying directly below the transfer box looking up, then you would be going ANTI clockwise to engage the CDL
