Code Reader, Rough Idle, Sea Foam
OK, so I'm new/retarded.
What Code Reader should I use for a 1995 Discovery1 with the 3.9l V8?
IDLE: I also noticed that the same Discovery1 idles weirdly. According to the tach on the dash, it revs up to about 1200 rpms, then settles/falls down to about 400 rpms. This complete cycle of high revs back to low revs takes about 2/3 of a second. It continues whether the engine is cold or already up to operating temperature. I can't seem to find any adverse affect on the operation, other than it sounds weird. It doesn't cut the engine when I start going on the higher revs nor on the lower revs. It's just a weird little thing that I'm not sure is harmful or not.
SEA FOAM: I have been to the website and I understand that I should probably run this stuff through my engine. I'm unsure which vacuum line and to use and what have you for that end of the procedure. As stated in earlier posts, I'm not mechanically retarded, but I will further clarify and say that I am not an experienced mechanic.

As for the idle. I would have to say that it is the idle stepper motor. Good place to start, but I have no other ideas.
Seafoam-As you are standing in front of the trk, on the left side of the engine on top of the valve cover is the PCV, unhook the hose from the valve cover and with the engine running stick a small funnel into the tube and slowly pour the can into the engine.
When I did mine I did it with a warm engine and poured half the can into the funnel but did not stall the engine.
I let it stumble and once it started to run smooth again I poured the rest of the can in and then shut off the engine. Waited 5-10 min while I put everything back together and took care of my tools. Then I drove the trk on the highway for 20 miles making sure that I put my foot into when I got on the highway and made sure that I ran it in 3rd gear to get the rpm's up to help break loose any carbon that was still in the engine.
Worked great. I plan on doing this every spring. And I ran a can through the gas tank over the holidays when we were going to be on the highway for extended time.
Also buy a spray can of carb cleaner and remove the air intake tube (that thing that comes from the air filter box to the intake plenum) and spray the t-body. Open the throttle and spray all around inside too. You may need two cans. And if you park the trk with the drivers side front tire on a 2x4 all of the carb cleaner will run into the engine not onto the valve cover.
PS-LOTS of smoke is normal when you do this.

OK, sorry that I didn't clarify.

me: What's that Lassie? There's an error code? what are you trying to tell me??
my Land Rover: 12
me: Umm ok, enough with the code, what's that mean?
spike: check my sweet website
me: oh the MAF!!! why didn't I think of that? I mean it DOES make sense... engine almost stalling out and then over revving in a weird repeating pattern. It certainly wasn't morse freakin code!
So, now the part I was wondering if I can easily clean/repair is the MAF. Is it worth it to repair/clean/polish it or should I take the old one out back and bury it next to Ol' Yeller..?

Where is the reputable place to purchase one of these for a 1995 Discovery 1 3.9l V8??
I see various places have various prices, but I'd rather spend more and have a good place to continually buy parts from.
Is it safe to drive my Disco around with a bad MAF? Is there any permanent damage that could happen because of it? Could it be the cause of my '4th gear, no power' problem?
