Code Reader, Rough Idle, Sea Foam
Here's the kicker, you are looking at over $600 for a new MAF. www.roverparts.com is a good supplier. www.roverlandparts.com is great for good used stuff. If they don't have it listed, call them to see.
I would find a local rover club and swap MAF's with someone before buying. That's a lot of coin to dump on a theory.
Last option, watch E-bay. I got a used MAF for $30 and it works great. I didn't need it, I just wanted a spare, knowing how much they are...
Depends on how lean/ rich you are running. If you are running rich, you will carbon up you motoer fast, and the early D1's don't have carbon cutters on the valves, so you can burn an exhaust valve quick.. Get it fixed... Find someone to swap with and test it out...

OK So. . .seriously I'm inexperienced:
I went to AutoZone and Advantage Auto Parts to try and get my codes read/cleared. Neither place can read the OBD1 thing, which maybe I shoulda called beforehand. SOOOOOO. . . in lieu of getting my codes read using the 'proper' method, I did it poor guy style:
I took the negative terminal off of my battery.
After the initial 02 code (battery recently disconnected) I got the following codes:
NOTHING.
SOOO. . I took it for a drive around the block and I found that there were no codes really coming back, but the idle still and was rough. As confused as I was, I took a closer look under the hood where the engine normally sits, and guess what I found: NOTHING.. JK I found an engine that wasn't running correctly, especially with all those tubes falling off a little T shaped plastic holder thing.
How much can vacuum lines affect how my 3.9l runs? Enough to throw odd codes and otherwise make it go like poop? Again, I just have very little experience with these things...
Good game, Go Team!
