Codes p0301, p1319, p0442
Mike I am Good with the basics thats about it. I was referred to a local mechanic and have an appt with him next wed. I will probably go ahaead and get him to do the tune up.( The plugs and wires are a pain in the a to get to) I will probably go ahead and get him to rebuild driveshaft at the same time. With those codes am I OK to drive around locally for a week?
I bought the Magnecor wires and took it in to a local mechanic thinking it was the plugs and wires. He checked it out and said the plugs and wires were fine. He said he just cleaned the throttle cable. He also said sometimes it will throw these codes if the gas is under a 1/4 tank. He reset the codes and said it should be fine. Does this sound right? I am now planning on getting the driveshaft rebuilt. Does anyone know of a good place in the Bradenton/Sarasota Fl area, as well as a good independent mechanic that works on LRs?
A low gas tank will not set off any codes, that is a load of BS. If that were the case then we would all have the check engine light on.
Save the plug wires, you will need them later.

Thats what I thought too. As far as the 0442 code goes ( small leak in the evaporative control system) he said that is too hard to track down and it is probably nothing. He said wait to see if the code comes back up.
I agree with him on the wait and see. Once you start getting mis-fire codes then do a tune up with those plug wires and good plugs. Even if that is beyond 60k. No need to replace them until you need to.
As for the EVAP leak, I would replace the gas cap.

52k is about when I had to replace the wires on my 02 disco. I didn't know any betterat the time and let them install STI ignition wires. 30k later and no problems. My indy L.R. mechanictold me he hasn't had any problems using them and I believe him. Hopefully, they'll last until my head gasket goes....LOL
I was left stranded on the highway from bad spark plug wires. Your mechanic is lazy. It is easy to come up with a diagnosis which requires you to do nothing.
Replace the plugs and wires. I did the wires in 1.5 hours. Just remove the secondary air tube that runs over the back of the engine above the coils. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!!! Then grab a long flat tip screwdriver and pop the boots off of the coils. My hands fit with enough room to work and get the job done.
Use Champion 7318 plugs properly gapped.
A flashing check engine light and violent misfires will kill your cats and engine or leave you out to dry.
Cheers,
Pete

Another bit of information:
The factory wires use carbon impregnated latex. Magnecor wires are metallic spiral wound and will not wear out. I find it hard to believe carbon and latex is going to work better than metal. The Magnecor website has all the relevant information on different types of wires out there.

Pete
