Default Cold Air Intake

So I did a thing on the Disco. So far no noticeable change on MPGs but definitely feels more responsive. And sounds cool.

How would that be colder than the stock intake?

Cold air intake is a sort of universal misnomer for this style intake. Not actually colder, but they are less restrictive due to the smoother design causing less turbulence.

I have run lots of these and have found that I usually get the best results by replacing the intake tube, but tying back into the factory air box so the paper filter can be retained for better filtration and lesser likelyhood of oiling the MAF sensor which can happen with these come style filters. Actually, the D2 lays in such a way that you can use only two silicon couplers and that will allow you to connect as follows: Air box to silicon 45* coupler to MAF to 90* coupler to throttle body with no metal pipe.

This is a nice little rendition! Similar to one of the variations I posted up years ago, except you used an angled tube instead of an angled silicon coupler. I like it!

How is the MAF sensor retained in the tube? That would be my concern here, as if that is only a pressure fit it will surely come out of allow leakage around the connection causing unmetered air into the engine creating a lean condition.

Looks sharp!

Looks good. There could be a problem because the 45 will push air towards the left (in the picture view), so MAF would not be as accurate compared to straight pipe.

The MAF is before the 45° bend.
Isn't the stock pipe also bent the same way? It's just less smooth inside.

A misnomer indeed. Technically now a hot air intake due to the proximity to the exhaust manifold and the cooling fan which is now pushing radiator heat towards the intake. It would be interesting to see how much hotter the IAT actually is.

Ultragauge has an air intake temperature reading, so I assume any decent OBDII scanner should be able to show it. Would definitely be interesting to see how different it is.
I would have assumed that a lot of turbulence in the intake stream would have been dealt with by the intake plenum.

My guess is at least 25°F hotter than drawing ambient air in through the fender. Never really been a fan of "looks and sounds cool" over efficiency or performance. Especially when it's a downgrade to what the factory gave you. To each his own.

I have a raised air snorkel that I have been planning to install. Mostly for the dusty conditions during summer months. I am wondering if having a snorkel with help with reduced intake temps.

snorkel will help with the intake temps some, especially when moving. The "cold" air intake is an issue for me as I would ruin a cone filter every weekend throughout the summer lol
