considering purchasing a 2003- buyer beware?
ORIGINAL: girouardrover
wow I just bought a 2003 Discovery HSE.Reading the posts about the oil pump failure has me worried.
My VIN (3A803470) is in the range. I'm not sure what to do. Do I just hope my vehicle is ok?
Do I go to the dealer and say what? Do I try to find and purchase some sort of warranty in case the problem hits my vehicle?
aaaaaa.
Any advice.

Go to the dealer, tell them that you know about the TSB, play nice. If they dont want to play ball then stop playing nice.
I heard that there is a recall on this, so check it out before it cost's you $7000.
Interesting phone call with the Land Rover Dealership... After running my VIN number I was told that there was no oil pump related service work done to my disco... That being said, he also stated that I had nothing to worry about since I had already made it past 100,000 miles. They said that if ithad beenone of the defective ones and going to go out on me it would have already done it many miles ago. Does that sound like sound logic or BS?
Yours might not be in the build dates that had the problems. There were only certain VIN's that were affected, so the dealer is probally right.
You could always call another dealer with your VIN and see if they saythe same thing.

oh gosh, how can you determine that? He might be 100% correct but you just never know. I would just be safe and replace it if you're worried about it. After hearing about the damge it can cause I would be worried, but if its been trusty so far....
Adding to this conversation- Our Disco falls into the Vin# range on the TSB. Called the dealership to have them check. The service rep asked if I had gotten a recall notification in the mail. Of course we moved and he mentioned maybe this is why you may have never gotten it. He runs my Vin# and calls back. Says my Vin# is not on the list for recall notification. Weird since it falls in the middle of that TSB on this site.
Mentions that I should be fine and that my fifth service is due. I asked him what it was consisting of- In a nutshell an oil change, brake inspection etc. He said I could take it to any authorized oil change place since I'm concerned about the oil pump and keep up with the services. Asked if I could change the oil myself- he mentioned as long as I keep documentation.
Still leary but a few things- Never bought an extended warranty at the time I could not afford it. In the last year modified the Disco since it needed tires. Got rid of the 18's and put oversized MT's on 16" L.R. rims in addition to a 2" Rovertym lift. I don't think that this will help with the dealership not that it would cause the oil pump to implode. Dealerships look for reasons not to perform warranty work- Hopefully this modification will not one day fall into the realm. I also found out through another source that Land Rover is in the midst of being bought out. They are struggling financially under Ford. Trying to get a big ticket item like this out of warranty would not be easy either way and this makes sense.
I prefer to perform oil changes on my own with KNN filters/ Royal Purple synthetic and will continue. Also keep my fingers crossed that this never turns out to be one of the bad oil pumps. I do like the advice of going to another dealership to run the Vin# in addition to taking the printed TSB to them. This will let them know that I'm educated on this problem.
Thoughts?

I too recently purchased an '03 D2 that falls into the TSB range. So far as I can find there has NOT been a recall for this issue. A TSB is NOT a recall. My dealer (Mpls, MN) played dumb until I showed them the paperwork and then they just flat out told me they aren't legally required to do anything. My truck has 80k poorly maintained miles before I bought it. Its currently in the shop getting the royal treatment by some very very nice rover fanatics. They told me if it hasen't happend yet, I shouldn't worry and realisticlly I shouldn't worry anyway since there isn't anything I can do. Keep your maint up, change the oil like you breath and all should be fine.
OK Guys... I just got home from a trip to my local dealer. Which happens to be Land Rover Wilmington in DE. I had the TSB in hand. I first asked the Service Manager about the KNOWN issue of oil pump failures in the 03's.... I got the completely confused look and of course thewhat seems to be company line " I've never heard of a problem with the oil pump failing"........ So I then had to explain to him how it must be really nice to live under that really cool rock of his----(I did this as polite as I could)----- and handed him the printout of the TSB. His first question was where did you get this?..... Then he said "You know they only put these out for dealers to know how to fix the vehicle in case something happens, and if your oil pump were going to fail it would have alot sooner than now you have 60,000 miles on it." " See the date on the TSB was 5 years ago, you don't have anything to worry about and the oil pump has never been a big problem in these models".............. I then tried to move on to What part would the factory playif my pump fails?..............Again.....The confused look....."This was not a recall. You doknow?".........(me).... Oh yes I know but since this is well KNOWN to what seems to beeveryone else but you. Not to mention the TSB states that this is due to a build error....... I just kinda thought you know the right thing to do and all!! ... (them)........ Oh no. There is nothing we could do.
So guys from the responses I have seen on earlier posts and my own experience we are on our own unless maybe Class action....Who knows. I can tell you it is very unlikely I would do business with that particular Dealer ever again.
Good Luck and please post any other responses. Informedowners are the only ammo we have!!!!!

Sounds like you have a stealership rather than a dealership... With Land Rover, some a good, some are bad, and some are ugly. In your case they just sound bad. If he said that he doesnt know about the 03' oil pump failure, he must have just started working there yesterday. LR of Asheville was offering to do the pump change for 1/2 price a few years ago. You should have a Rover shop call them and teach them about the oil pump failure, if they are that dumb there, they need as much help as they can get!
