Default constant noise from down under.

Guys, posted this on Dweb, but I guess its a bit too technical for them. I guess I should have asked about tire size, roof rack or lift to get an answer.

Here goes.

I have this noise as I drive along and can only hear it when driving alongside a curb or long building cause the sound bounces off of them, which tells me that it is there all the time.

Its like a high pitch constant whistling. Not tweet, tweet tweet, but more of a SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS kinda like metal on metal type noise. It is there all the time, does not seem to accelerate or slow down, it is just constant.

I thought it could be brake related since they will need to be done soon , but slowly braking to a halt does not change the constant SSSSSS which just gradually stops as the vehicle does. I though the noise would just stop as I hit the pedal hard, but it doesn't stop nor change the pitch of the noise.

I have brake cleaner which I will try tomorrow, but what do you think ??? I have no experience with CV shafts could it be that??? What noise do they make when they start to go???

The front driveshaft has received greasable u-joints which are greased up, and the noise was there before the u-joints anyway.

What do you think???

Oh ya, the noise isn't there is the vehicle is not moving, which takes care of the pulley, belt or any engine related possibility.

?
Ok, my facial expressions dont translate well to the internet. Dude, I have NO idea.
Try this, open the hood and rev the engine, do you still hear it?
Put the trk up on 4 jack stands, put it in gear and see if the noise is there, a lift is better, but most of us dont have one in our garage.

ON what year Disco??
Have you replaced your front u-joints yet?
If it is not the brake, it will be the drive shaft.

X2 on the wheel bearing. Jack up each wheel and see if you have any play in it....

All seems fixed, took the tires off yestersday and gave the brakes a good cleaning. I found that there was quite a bit of rust on the edges of each disc. Used a hammer and gave the calipers and discsa good beating, which let off a suprising amount of crap at each corner, but mostly in the front. Anyways, as said...no more noise. Lets just hope that it is not just temporary. The brakes will be done in he very near futur anyway.
