is there any good method to flushing the cooling system?

 

No, just remove a coolant hose at the t/stat, drain all out you can and refill with Dexcool. Might want to add a bottle of Purple Ice to the system for a more efficient system.

 

Mike, I can not say whether or not DexCool has been used in the past or is currently in the system, for a while I was having a heavy truck mechanic service it in my shop. Since than I have taken over the service and am trying to updateall service aspects. The coolant inmy truck is red-heavy duty coolant, more likely the coolant used in our trucks.Is there a way to flush the system completely to ensure I have only DexCool or any other suggestions???

I'll jump in here since this is the last thing I have to service on my truck, although I'm waiting a few months for Spring to do it (there is NO temperature outside right now). I have no experience with LR, but I notice in the RAVE that there is a drain plug on both sides of the engine, I have no idea how accessible they are. On other vehicles, I take out the blocks drain plug and unhook the lower radiator hose, letting everything drain. Then I start unhooking any hoses that are easy to get at and run very low pressure water through them (including the reservoir), letting the water drain out the bottom until it turns clear. This has worked great in the past, I'm not sure about a Land Rover though????

I currently have red fluid as well. I assume that replacing it with any type of OAT will be fine. Just don't mix it with a green inorganic coolant. It would be nice to know what the red is though...

 

Here's the procedure I've always used with my vehicles, for what it's worth. Should work just fine on a Land Rover.
[ol][*]Drain all the coolantyou can from the system through the petcock in the radiator and/or the lower radiator hose.[*]Refill with freshwater and a bottle of Prestone cooling system flush, taking care to remove any air in the system if there is a plug for that purpose at the top of the engine. (Land Rover has one inline in the upper radiator hose)[*]Start engine and run to operating temperature +15 min[*]Drain water andflushing agent out[*]Refill with fresh (this time using distilled) water only and run to operating temperature[*]Drain water out again.[*]Get total cooling system volume from manual and add 1/2 of that amount in pure anti-freeze (in this case dexcool). Then top off with distilled water. This will create a 50/50 mixture in the system.[*]Take care to remove any air in the system[*]Voila![/ol]
