Default Coolant Leaking

1998 Discovery

Found a small puddle of coolant behind by water pump. I cleaned up the area and started the engine and found a small leak coming from between the engine block and ( I don't what this part is) and the metal piece that the water pump is bolted on to. The water pump isn't leaking, onlyat the engine block. I can see that there is a gasket between this piece and the engine block. My question is, what is the name of part that is between the engine block and the water pump? Where do I find a gasket for this part, or do I have a bigger problem than just a leaky gasket? Thanks.

That part is called the front cover. It houses your timing chain and oil pump... www.roverparts.com has gaskets.. Don't know what the leak means, though. I would make sure the leak is coming from here before you remove the cover, you have to pull the radiator and crank pulley to get to it...

Thanks Okdiscoguy. Yea, I thought is was a strange place for the leak. The only thing I can think of is that coolant is leaking from the pump down the shaft were the bolt goes through both the pump and the front cover to the engine block. I've almost got a 100k on my disco, so I think I'll just replace the pump and see if that fixes the leak. Maybe just wishful thinking....

Hi,

Exact same problem on my 97 v8 - small leak from the upper right hand corner of the front cover. Theres the water pump & a gasket, then the front cover followed by a gasket that attaches to the front of the block. If its the front cover gasket, changing the pump probably wont help.

My leak is so minor (just one or two drops after you switch off) that I havent done anything about it. Doesnt seem to be getting any worse. Had the system pressure tested - no problem. Mechanic said try a non-clogging radiator stop leak product otherwise its several hours work to replace the gasket.

Cheers.
