Default Coolant: Throttle Body Heater Plate

Hey Guys,

Been fighting coolant issues for months...

Is it typical to have to replace the Throttle Body Heater
Plate... Twice in 6 months??

Please advise.

Thanks,

Very typical

Best bet is to use this site to find the tutorial on how to delete it and completely bypass it.

Previous owner of my current rig did it or else I'd be able to tell you lol

They do go bad once a while, but twice in 6 months is not acceptable , something is wrong, either mating surfaces are corroded, or at time of installing new gasket something is done wrong, ( overtightening the screws or not tightening enough or a bad quality gasket,)

You can directly bypass it. The small coolant hose coming from the back of the a/c compressor, cut it, get a barb adapter from home depot then connect the other hose coming from the reservoir. Also dint forget the 2 hose clamps to secure the fitting.

There will probably be people come in and fight about it, but I've had mine bypassed for 2-3 years without any issues.

I know. I have seen that very long post. All my Discos were bypassed very long time ago. First thing to do like replacing driveshaft. That small area there has 3 points to leak coolant. 2 hose clamps and the gasket itself.

I live in Chicago, spend a lot of time in MN, so I fixed mine. If I lived in a warmer climate I would have deleted it.

When I took mine off, I put a piece of very fine sand paper on a flat surface, and I sanded the mating surface of the TB. I saw this on a car show on velocity, and thought I might as well do that. Seemed like a good idea. It hasn't leaked to my knowledge. You run it across the sand paper straight, turning 90 degrees.

Dear god man. Don't bypass your TBH. Dogs will be living with cats. The sky will fall. Volcanoes. Blizzards. Tornados. Hurricanes. Flat chested women everywhere.

I live in northern Nebraska. Minus 30 is fairly common. Six rovers in my family. Never been a problem.

X6 on the delete. It's one of many weak links in the coolant system.

If a LR locks up in cooler weather they can park on the side of the road next to Hummer H3’s which did not come with a throttle body heater plate... I never heard of a single H3 having issues and several owners were in Alaska & Canada.

I do seriously treat that flaw with the throttle body heater plate like a D2 front drive shaft or swapping out the OEM thermostat for the 180F unit as soon as you buy a D2. It’s a deadly enough little leak to go undetected until ya peg out on the freeway at 230F due to no more coolant.

When I delete it I go all out!! I remove that POS from the throttle body completely, I take some new 5/16 coolant line from the intake to the reservoir and I slide on a 8inch long spark plug wire heat protector boot over the hose where it hangs over the exhaust by the reservoir. Almost 6 years now without a single issue after being completely removed on any of my D2’s.
