Default cooling fan question

Is it common for these fans to have a pretty good wobble to them, by wobble I mean movement front to back so that if you look from the side you can see it at the top.

is this telling me the fan is going out?

Also since we are on the subject, does anyone replace the stock fan with slimlines? success? horror stories?

and still since we are on the subject, anyone replace the stock Rad with an aluminum replacement that they found works well?

just thoughts bouncing around in my head.

1. No, that's not common. May need a new fan, clutch, or just have a loose bolt or 2.
2. I replaced my stock fan/clutch with an electric slimline...no issues so far. Please see https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...install-52940/ for more info on that.
3. I've searched the 4 corners of the earth for an all-aluminum radiator...no luck. I ended up going with Genesis as well, but I found a coupon code...$111

Oh I fear that the wobble you report is the water pump to which the fan is bolted.

9 times out of 10, it is the water pump that is failing. If that is the case, quit driving it and plan on a new pump and viscus.

Son of a B*%#@

that was not what I wanted to hear. I tried to move it after the belt install and I couldnt feel any play in the fan at all.

Guess I better take a look at that before work.

can you just fit a standard aluminum fan or does it have to have the viscous clutch?

You don't really want to, as far as I can remember, I do not remember anyone switch to an aluminum fan. What year is your Disco, if not a 4.6, you can buy a good after market viscus for $65 to $80.
Make sure to replace your t/stat with a new 180 if you haven;t yet.

Here's what happens when it wobbles. The impeller eats aluminum, both the pump and the front cover. One after market crossover clutch is a 2000 Chevy Express van 4.3 liter without AC. Bolt holes on fan have to be increased. Bolts to our water pump, which is same in D1 or D2. And yes, that means a junkyard Chevy clutch and fan will fit, with a little precise trimming. I experimented and got one from a 2000 Blazer to fit. So for me, it was $5 for a water pump off a D2 (looked pretty new), and $19 for Chevy clutch and fan.

Boneyards are not for everyone, but when stuck a long way from home, or a long way from next payday; they can be useful.

Rule of thumb is that fan clutch gets weaker, as does pump. Guys put on a new clutch, and old pump has hard time dancing fast with Miss Fanny Clutch, the Brazilian body builder babe. Old pump dies soon. Clutch and WP love to jump off cliff together, who can blame them, they made millions of turns around the dance floor and were worn down in perfect balance.
