Default Correct suspension for 33x12.5x18 tire?

I promise I did search the forum archives but couldn't find an answer.

Can anybody tell me the best suspension setup to run a 33x12.5x18 Open Country M/T? I am set on this tire size and have seen it in action. It was amazing.

The tire is 5 inches taller than my current 255/55/18 on the 2003 Discovery. Is it a matter of adding a 1" spacer to an OME package? What about steering damper, arms, driveshaft, etc? Does anybody know where I can find rear air to spring conversion kit WITHOUT springs? Each kit I see on the major sites comes with a stock spring.

Thanks in advance!

Talk to Justin at Lucky 8. He runs some pretty big set ups and sells all sorts of longer travel suspension products. If you want to go really big, he can hook you up with everything required, including the radius arms and all the steering adjustments you will need. Let us know what you decide to do.

That is a huge tire and would probably require a 3" lift with a spacer and removal of running boards and trimming off the bumper above the fog lights. Then you would need to upgrade the brake lines, add HD axles, new wheels with the correct back spacing (or 1.5 -2" hub spacers), plus a new HD driveshaft, also you would have to change your gear ratio. I would suspect you are looking at a few thousands of dollars. Or you could just get a set of cooper zeons ltz in 286/60r18, a set of 1" hub spacers, 2" lift and some trimming and call it good.

I know im comparing apples to oranges here but im running 33-12.50-16 on my D1 with 4" lift lots and lots of fender cutting. Not to mention all the gearing and drive train upgrades along with steering issues that come with it. I think Justins new terrafirma truck is running 3" lift and 33"s but they rub on every bump he hit.

If you have the money to do it right, then do it!

Otherwise go with a smaller tire.

What year is the truck and why so big? All you are getting from that big a tire is looks while a smaller tire will do the same thing for a lot less money and strain on the truck. You are looking at more then just a lift, you will need a complete suspension rework, a regeared t/case, diffs, lockers, wheels and or spacers axle and CV joints for starters. Might want to go on-line to RTE and look at all the extra parts needed.

True he has a lift and radius arms, But dont recall him mentioning gearing changes or HD axles. If he does let me know cause Im considering running the same setup. I have done the drive shaft , bumper and have the lift waiting for the tires. If Im setting myself up for failure let me know....

I'm running 285/75/16 (slightly smaller than 33") with a 3" lift and had some trimming to do in the front and some massaging in of the rear quarter panel. If you don't wheel hard you don't need HD axles and the gearing is far from ideal but is not necessary. I am looking to regear sooner than later especially living at elevation and lots of long steep mountain passes. I have a rear locker as well as the CDL and will add a front locker when I regear. I wheel almost every weekend once the snow melts so I'm sure it's just a matter of time before I break an axle and then I'll look to upgrade but I'm not huge on laying on the skinny pedal to get up obstacles so hopefully it will be a while before I have to address them. But I did not have any issues last year which included 2 trips to Moab.
