Default correct tranny fill method

so i am gonna swap fluid on my tranny.

what is the correct fill method?

drain and fill. start and row though gears. then check again?

should the temp be at running temp? does the rig need to be running to check proper capacity?

and how much fluid do i need?

i would have these all answered by my rave but i lost my disc grrrrr

I'm no expert but I've done it once incorrectly, and once correctly. I know because there was a quart difference. If you only get <5 qts in, somethings wrong.

1. Engine off, fill til overflow
2. Start truck, shift slowly through all gears a few times.
3. Keep truck running, restart fill.
4. Watch the exhaust!
5. Once or twice during top-off, shift thru gears again.
6. When it overflows, replace plug.
7. Turn truck off.
8. Clean mess!

Good luck.

P.s. I say hell no to being at operating temp because you'll burn yourself on the exhaust.

D2's don't have a dip stick.

Danny, you have a D1. They were made up to mid 99, on the 99's the D1 is designated with an SD. The next series is 2. They are a different animal in almost every way. New body lines, longer, new engine management, drivetrain, and interior.

Just wanted to clear that up for you because some of your posts have been on D2 stuff, and yours does not have the same stuff....

Back to the point, yours has a dipstick, and yes, you fill through there. A d2 has a sealed tranny, like a BMW, and you have to fill through a hole in the side while it is running.
