Default Corroed/leaking swivel ball: Replace is a must?

I am having problems with the left swivel ball in a 94 Disco I. My mechanic removed the swivel ball and it is corroed in several places around it, and ofcourse, in tho se places the chrome has gone. That is causing the leakage Is there any way to stop this leaking without having to replace the whole ball?

I have found a gaitor kit that can be installed to protect the swivel. Will it prevent the leaking?

Thanks in advance for all your comments!!

Not too sure here, but the dealer has grease packs for lubing to prevent the leakage. Each pack contains enough for one side. If it is still leaking out, there is a bad seal on the axle allowing diff fluid to run down the axle into the swivel housing. You get a new seal with good brake kits. Not sure if this will help you, but it will keep this post up there for others to chime in.....

okdiscoguy:

Thanks for your reply. I continued searching for answers, and I found this comment in a forum:

JB weld those pits up!

seriously, fill the pitted area with JB weld and sand smooth.
i've seen this done several times with amazing results.
and it won't cost you $300!

This is the link where I got the comment:

If the swivel ball is pitted it will need to be replaced.

There is a up dated gray grease that took the place of the gear oil
( the same stuff in the diffs ) this helps keep the seals from drying out
from the gearoil getting low.

Once the swivel starts to get pitted, you really should replace it and as mentioned above then use the new grease put out by Rover instead of the gear oil.
