Cracked flex plates are common on Disco's, although usually not that bad as your tacoma. I just took one off of the 02' I am working on, I will post photos a little later. Really need to drop the pan to do a good inspection.

 

They very much do and the symptoms are as the OP described.

OP, cost to replace mine a month ago on my Tacoma was $1100.

This happens because of the site update. If there is a relevant thread to the one you are reading, it autoloads it below, so if you "scroll to the bottom" you end up replying to the "relevant thread" not the one you actually opened
