Default Couple Quick Questions...

Hello All, I have a 2001 SE7 Discovery II. I use it just to get to and from school and work and occasionally will run across the city in it. The Check Engine Light has been on since we got the car (which was back in december) and we have been slowly but surely getting the list of things needed to get the light to go off fixed. We just replaced the Mass Air Flow sensor about two weeks ago, and we know that the last two things needed are the spark plugs and wires (the previous owners had some installed about a year ago that are no good) and the headgaskets. I plan to get the wires and plugs replaced this month. My questions are 1. Could the leaky headgaskets cause the service engine light to go off or is it just the wires and plugs? 2. Would the car be in good enough shape, once we get the wires and plugs done, for me to take the car on roughly a 300 mile round trip? We plan to get the headgaskets done hopefully sometime this summer, it will just be a costly trip to the shop. Thanks for any input!

First off what are your codes that are throwing the CEL? How many miles are on your rover? Why do you think the headgaskets are bad, is it leaking? Get these checked out and get back to us.

Um, I don't know the codes off hand (our mechanic let me look at his scanner when we took it in for the MAF, but I dont have one myself). I can tell you that all of the error codes were due to misfires. The car has about 105,000 miles on it. When we got the car looked at when we bought it, our mechanic (used to work for LR, recently started his own shop) told us that he thought they would need to be replaced at some point. Sorry I know that is not too specific, but I do know that stuff off the top of my head.

Also the headgaskets are not causing any coolant to actually leak underneath the car. The car seems to be holding coolant fine.

If the truck is holding coolant then do not replace the ehadgaskeys, they go bad at the 80k range, so at 105,000 they should have been replaced already.
Do the tune up and then go on your trip.
300 miles is nothing.

Haha, thanks Spike, I have seen on most of the posts that they should be done in the 80000's. Would these set off the CEL light?

The only way the headgaskets would set off the CEL is if coolant were getting into the cylinders and causing severe misfires.
If this were the case then you would have white smoke coming out of the tail pipe all the time as well as loosing coolant.
Do the tune up, clear the light and drive it.

Okay awesome, thanks for the help. Also we were looking through the cars service records and it looks like at 87,000 miles the previous owners took it to the Land Rover Dealer while it was under warranty and they replace the left headgasket.
