That is a question that will divide this forum. It all comes down to peace of mind. Since it is a part that can cause your truck to shut down and leave you stranded, and a part that is common to fail, I would at least carry a spare with me. You could change it out on the side of the road if worse came to worse, but it is not the easiest part to get to so you might find it difficult.

I keep a spare, but changing it on the side of the road will take a lot of time, because you have to wait for the exhaust to cool a little before you do.

Has anyone had any experience with the new one failing? I'd personally leave that thing in place till it dies.

I had 3 NEW thermostats fail in a row on my wife's VW beetle. I was just doing preventative maint when I replaced the first one. That's a record for me, as I've had random ones fail throughout my life, but not THREE back to back. I bought 3 of the most expensive at first, different brands and ended up with the cheapest, and it worked.

Just my two cents worth: I wouldn't replace it until it breaks.

Lucky8 has a great video on how to replace it. I think it would be replaced with the exhaust in place (they separate the flange, maybe for the camera), but the above-poster is correct... takes a long time to cool and doing that on the side of the road would be a real PITA.
