crankcase Question
The crankcase is the area beneath the pistons, with the cam. It is where all the 'cranking' of the piston rods happens from the cam up into the cylinders.
The oil pan is just the bottom of the crankcase. Its the bottom catch all for the oil. The oil pickup tube sucks up the oil from the pan, and takes it back up to the top of the engine to circulate again.
So yea they are kinda the same general area of the engine, but they're not the same thing exactly

When somebody says drain the crankcase they mean drain the oil. The sump is the oil pan, the crankcase is the middle from the middle of the engine and lower.
If you look at the front of the engine you will notice that it is shaped like a "V".The bottom of the "V"starts the crankcase.
It is not specific, and saying the crankcase just means the oil pan for all intensive purposes.
And there is no such thing as a stupid question, if youi dont know then ask.
