Yes and no. To have it balanced properly, they have to do the crank also. That's what is balanced. If you look at the original pulley and take the weight off your original and epoxy it on the new one in the exact same spot

That's a cheat but if you ever see a rebuilt assembly, they have the harmonic balancer on there for that exact reason. I used to build a lot of ford 302's and always bought the rotating assembly (crankshaft with the matched balancer so I had no worries).

The machinist I use balances each piece of the rotating assembly separately.

Its ridiculous to think if you have an issue with the pulley or the ring gear that you have to tear down the motor to balance all the components.

True. I was just speaking off of building ford 302's from scratch. Logic would say that you can transfer the weight from the original to the new one

So maybe the "new to me" balancer isn't bad, just need to put my old weight in the exact same place? Sounds easy enough. My original balancer is a 10g, and the new one I got is a 5g

Im going to take a wild guess here.....I am thinking this is a perfect example of after you put something back together, you then notice something (like your pulley not rotating perfectly) BUT, the truth to the matter is, it was probably doing a slight wobble before you tore down the front of the motor...You just never thought to look down closely at it....We just sometimes don't notice things like this until AFTER we get done wiping our greasy mitts all over everything. I've had this "type" of phenominum happen to me my entire mechanic life...Your harmonic balancer "slight wobble issue" is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Anyone else relate to what Im talking about?

The harmonic balancer wasn't shaking when I redid the front end 10k ago. I noticed oil coming from behind the balancer and noticed it was slightly shaking. Replaced the seal and the Balancer, it has MORE shake. So no, the shake was not there, and now it is 10k miles later

just reread my post and it couldn't have come across a little harsh. Totally not my intent! Sorry about that!
