Default creaking crunching sound while steering

Here goes:

1995 Disco 1 auto tranny, 115k on the clock, 3.9l V8.... That's the admin data.

When I turn the wheel in either direction I hear a creaking/crunching sound, but it's only under power. No matter how hard I try to reproduce the sound without using the gas pedal, it won't. I'm sure all my neighbors are wondering why I'm turning circles in the roads outside of my neighborhood.

If there are any suggestions, I'd love to hear what everyone has to offer!

Where does it sound like it is coming from? The front? Left wheel, right? What speeds? Have you checked your fluid levels? Differentials included?

So it only happens when you are turning the steering wheel AND when you apply the throttle AND when you are moving?

Spike: I'll check those out and see what comes of it. It's coming from the front of the car, but I can't tell if it's from the left or the right. Assuming the fluids are all correct, what would it mean from either side, left or right?

JKID: Yeah. . . power turning and moving. ALL have to be happening.

I would have to say the swivel ball is going bad. Make sure that it is greased and see if that helps. Turn your wheel hard to left, look under the front of the trk...

...where the inside of the wheel meets the axle is a big shiny ball. There is a fill plug on the top of it. Remove the plug and pump grease into the ball. 20 pumps with your grease gun, do both sides. See what happens.

The same stuff that you use on your u-joints. Seriously. 20 pumps. To much and you will blow out a axle seal. Do this twice a year.

is it really as simple as opening the fill plug and squeezing in a tube of the grease? do I need to attempt to drain what's currently in there?

Is there any difference between the u-joint grease and the Land Rover swivel grease?

You mentioned something about not hurting an axle seal..... Sounds 'Spensive!

Yes, it is that simple. LR swivel ball grease is a mixture of gear lube and grease. I use grease, most everybody else uses grease too. You will never get it ot drain, it is to thick.
