Hey all! So in the next couple of weeks I will be replacing the gaskets on the oil pan, trans, and front timing cover and all its accessories.
My question is the titled crucifix seals on the oil pan. I am unfamiliar with these and read the rave about them but I does not talk of them other than ad an rtv to them.
So, what the hell are they?

 

The crucifix seals are the side seals for the rear main cap. They leak more often than the rear main seal does. If you have a leak at the rear main, it is likely the crucifix seals. Not hard to change once you have the oil pan off. If you replace these, the front cover seal, and do the PCV mod your Rover will never leak a drop.

One other question.

I have been reading about these for a couple hours now and I have seen some mention that in order to remove and replace the crucifix seals, that new main bearings would have to be installed also on that rear cap.

Is this correct? I also read the TSB from LR about crucifix seals leaking and the repair instructions do not mention having to replace the bearings.

The bearing DOES NOT have to be replaced. I have one apart right now, I will post pictures a bit later.

Crank with cap removed - you can see where the seals left their mark - also note the crank condition - this engine had 80k on it.

Underside of cap - bearing babbitt barely even worn - typically babbitt thickness is .0005-.0008, so this engines bearings have seen very little wear.



Rear main seal area (seal is out)- rear seals rarely leak. Difficult to change with the engine in the car, but easy with it out.

Wow! Very helpful pics. Is thee area I circled in red where it typically fails? I assume its also where I should put the Hylomar at the junction between the cap and block?

 

Also, I am guessing that Since I would not need to replace the bottom half, (accessible) bearing; that I just need to make sure its really clean. Should I also put a tin film of motor oil on the bearing?

 

Yes and Yes - Right on the gasket sealer also, although they changed the design of the crucifix seals since production and normal silicone sealant is fine.
