Default Cylinder 4 Misfire

History.

-Truck has 66,000 miles
-Head gasket job done at 41,000 miles.
-60,000 mile service done in march, 2010.
-Plug Wires at 62,000 miles.
-Coils August 65,000 miles.

Service Engine Soon light on. I have my own obdII scanner, and it read P0304 (misfire cylinder 4) and P0300 (misfire multiple cylinders) codes. Cleared them and when i started it up again the light came back on. Runs good when warm. Misses when cold. Also a little tap during idle when warm intermittently.

Is this a good course of action and what am i missing...

Change cylinder 4 plug. Switch plug wires and see if the miss follows the wire. (i know these are new plugs and wires, i'm just hoping it's an easy fix). Check for moisture on top of cylinder #4 tomorrow morning before i start it.

What else before i let a pro look at it?...

That is a great way to start diagnosing the problem if the miss does not follow the wire (which i think it will)then u know it is probally a coil pack.also that tick that you have when the truck is cold is probaly a exhaust manifold leak not the motor ticking it is often mistaken for that

Factory plug wires are some of the worst in the market, if you want help tracking this down, PM me your number and I'll call and walk you thru what to do.

I'm embarrassed to say, especially after mike called, that the problem was the connector that is in the rubber boot of the plug wire, (whatever that is called)was pushed too far in the boot where i couldn't see it, and it was not making a connection with the plug. just got some needle nose pliers and pulled it a little farther out so i could see it and plugged it back in. cleared the code, and so far it's running well and no codes.

...and thank you for reporting back!! So many people have problems, post their symptoms on the forum, do some troubleshooting, then talk to Mike on the phone. Once the problem is fixed, nothing more is reported. If another member is having the same problem, they will probably read through the thread looking for a solution, only to find the only apparent solution is to call Mike, and the process continues ad infinitum.

that's what i was thinking. i know personally that some of these problems can feel like a big deal. 90% of what i know about these trucks is from studying this forum and then applying what i've learned on my d1 on the weekend. it's been helpful to me, when i've searched for an answer to actually have a solution at the end of my search.

i've noticed that end the end, the solution is many times very simple. just need to be pointed in the right direction.
