Default D1 bumper on a D2

Anyone ever try to retro-fit?

Thanks,
Dave

I've never seen it done, and IMO it would be nearly impossible because the DII is a couple inches wider than the DI.

what type of bumper? i have a D1 ARB on my D2. the D1 has 3 horizontal mounting holes while the D2 has 2. That third mounting hole is located behind a piece of angled frame support that the D1 doesnt have. So I had to trim the mounts on the ARB a couple inches so that they would butt up against the angled support. to make sure it doesnt go anywhere i used 1/2" grade 8 mil-spec ultra-non-corrosive bolts, nuts and washers.

Ed,
Now that is my kind of thinking. Not a big fan of the DII ARB offerings, but a retrofit from a D1 sounds ok.

I just want a metal bumper to take some knocks. The DII bumper is plastic crap.

That is great little nugget of info....the Craigslist search continues!

the front two holes are perfectly aligned and the bumper fits great, you just need to make that trim. the D2 ARB's have a bolt that goes vertical so they each have 3. I have not had any problems with just the two bolts i used. This goes in reverse, you could fit a d2 bumper on a d1 but you will be missing the third hole. then you have to look at air bag vs non air bag compatiable. if you get an air bag compatiable ( i know this defeats the purpose) but i would weld the crush cans to the frame for extra support. if you look how you stock bumper mounts you will understand what i am talking about. when you do find a bumper make sure to use 1/2" grade 8 bolts, the 1/2" bolts fit nice and tight in there and are 30x stronger than the stock 3/8" grade 5 bolts it comes with.

When I installed my ARB, I had to drill the two vertical holes on both sections of frame, originally there is just horizontal mounting hardware.

you are talking about installing a D2 bumper? the D2 ARB's have the vertical hole so you can mount there as well yes. The D1's don't have that. I mean you can easily add that if you wanted.

Yeah, when I installed the d2 arb bumper on my 03, the instructions have you drill holes for the vertical mounting hardware. They aren't there to start with.
