Default D1 to D2 High Low Transfer Shifter

Danny Lee brought up a good question regarding the fitment of a D1 high low transfer case shifter assembly into a late D2 model. So the question is "will it fit into a Disco 2?". I did notice that the Disco 2 shifter is smaller and has a new design. I currently own the Disco 1 high low assembly and am still working on rebuilding it. Eventually I will need to find a good home for it whether thats in a 04 Disco 2 or sold to a Disco 1 owner.

Thanks in advance.

You won't need it in the 04 D2. That is the year LR finally realised that traction control alone wouldn't cut the mustard, and reinstated both a lockable transfer case and the shifter/linkage to operate it.

*if this is a recent post, maybe I need to read it before writing further...

Yeah I'm already aware of Land Rover's decision to reinstall the differential lock assembly, just dont know if the original D1 version would in fact fit the D2 or not. I dont actually need the part myself as I'm quit confident in the 04 D2 setup so if the original will not not fit in the D2 then I will eventually need to sell it once I finish rebuilding it.

Ed if correct. They both have basically the same t/case, just needs a little tweaking.

Alright good to know. I did notice however that the new transfer case shifter for the D2 looks different and appears to be smaller and more contemporary - in your opinion is the newer transfer case shifter for the D2 models a better more improved design? or Is the D1 design better?

the D2 shifter is cable operated, which may explain why they can get by with a shorted shifer (no linkage).

The '04 D2 t/c shifter is just an updated design that builds off the existing D2 set up using a cable. I don't know that one is superior to the other...certainly not in any significant way. Both the D1 t/c shifters and the '04 D2 design work very nicely, but as Ed noted the D1 requires some adjustment (approx 1") to the curve of the arm that locks/unlocks the t/c.

Given the cost of the kit from Ashcroft (~$500) or a '04 D2 shifter, the choice was easy...I picked up my D1 shifter for $65 (incl shipping) from a junk yard parting out a '95 D1 on eBay.

Hmm what to do, what to do?
I'm sure the shifter in my 04 works fine so I think I'll just finnish rebuilding my D1 shifter and sell it. Thanks much for everyones input.
