Default D1 Radio No Worky - Where To Start?

The radio in my 1998 hasn't worked since I bought it. It's the radio w/cassette and CD changer. By all appearances the radio powers and the functions appear to work: it will scan and lock onto FM stations, and you can go through all the bass/trebble, etc functions. Just no audio. Well, if ya turn the radio up all the way, you can faintly hear audio.Where to start. Is there a separate amplifier? If so, where is it located and is it fused separately? Also, might there be a radio function that I'm not aware of that is muting the audio?

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

I had a similar problem with my '97. The CD changer didnt work and the stereo wasnt very loud.
So I went to Best Buy and just bought a CD head unit and dumped the amp and CD changer.

Sounds like an issue with the amp.

The amp would allow the signal to pass through regardless of if it was working or not. Since you can hear the radio faintly, it suggests to me that the amp is not powered on and the reason the sound is faint at high volume is because the head unit does not have enough power to drive the speakers, only enough to produce minimal sound.

JMT
I agree (with the amp theory). I'll check it for power. Just wondering if anybody knew if it was fused separately. I'll check it out.

Are the amplifiers, or any part of the radio system known to go out frequently?
