D1 vs D2 headlights

Default D1 vs D2 headlights

Does anyone know if there is a difference between D1 and the 99-02 D2 headlights? Other than the internal black surround? Did they make any pattern or beam improvements to them? I was looking at HIDxtra's conversion which is very reasonably priced, but thought,hey if I'm gonna do that, maybe upgrade the housing as well, if the D2's are better. Thanks

The housings are different.
What brand of HID's are you looking at, what wattage, what heat range?

I was looking at the HIDExtra.com h4 hi/low and the bi-xenon, in the 5000 or 6000k. the bi-xenon kit is about $30 more. But the hi/low kit wasn't impressive because the high beam is a halogen bulb, not an HID, where the bi-xenon is an HID for high and low beams. I think it'd be worth the 30 bucks extra.
Now I assume by saying diffrent housings, it wouldn't be a direct fit? It was an idea, but I think the HID conversion would be impressive enough by itself.

Oh, and if i remember right, I believe they only draw 35 watts

I thought the Hi-Lo was 1 hid's with a motorized reflector and the Bi-Xenon was a Hid low and halogen high

I too am curious about the lens/projector diffrence

it looks like it uses a separate hid and halogen bulb, this is the hi/low bulb. The bi-xenon says its "telescopic", whatever that is. Guessing that means something moves for changing lo to hi beams

I would like to see this as well. My headlights and turn signals are due for replacement and am looking into all options.

You assume incorrectly. The early D2 lights are a direct fit in a D1 and they're cheaper. What the exact difference is I don't know. Unless I had a black Disco and was going for more of a blacked out looked I would stick with the D1 headlights. The black trim around the D2 headlights always make me think the truck looks like it has 2 black eyes. I am running bi-xenon HIDs in my factory D1 housings and they are impressive. You won't regret it, unles of course the cops decide to hassle you about them.

The "telescopic" bi-xenon actually uses a small motor to pull the bulb back in the base to change to the high beam. It's actually a pretty cool setup that is very effective. The bi-xenon does not actually get any brighter like a normal halogen does on high beam, it just changes the beam to project the light further out.

AK Rover, it's a "solenoid coil" type actuation, not motorized. I use them in my motorcycles and I am very tempting to install them into my Disco as well, in which I currently burn PIAA 80/80W Star White powersport bulbs.

I thought the D1 and early D2's were interchangable, but wasnt sure. But if the only diffrence is looks I wont bother. So you think it'd be worth the extra money for the bi-xenon over hi/low kit?
