Default D1 vs DII Fuel

Is it true that the DII can run regular gas, while the D1 can only run premium?

I just picked up a D1 and would of course rather not pay for premium gas in such a guzzling machine... but if it REQUIRES it I guess I don't have a choice.

Can I get away with Regular (86 oct) in my 96 D1?

They are both supposed to run high octane, if you don't you'll loose power, MPG and build up carbon.

Hey Mike,

Is running premium fuel really that critical? I do it for lack of understanding of what happens if I don't, but I gotta tell you, it sucks.

Secondly, what additives do you suggest using from time to time? Anything in the fuel?

It is real important, Rover engines will carbon up so easily, even faster on regular and then you get into misfires and valve related problems. High test will give you at least 1 more MPG and alot more power.
As for addiitives A good cleaner to use is SeaFoam and then I throw some Lucas fuel conditioner in on every other tank. Both are inexpensive and will keep your performance up.

If you think about it the price really isn't that much more than regular. Where I live the 93 octane is only about 10 centsmore than regular 87octane per gallon. For me that's less than $2 more for every time I fill up. (I fill up before it gets down to 1/4 tank). When you factor in slightly better gas mileage it's really not much of an issue.
