Default D2 gearbox problems

Hi everyone,My discovery 2 has got a automatic gearbox issue (big surprise ik) So a while ago i was on a long towing run and 2/3 of the way through the gearbox gave out so i had another one fitted. Now every time it's started the gearbox will not work for a bit. The selector feels normal but with no real feedback like the clunk it normally makes as it engages, no drop in rpm, no response in drive or reverse. Then when it gets warm it's fine, driving as it should (the clunk included) and it will only do this again after it's been sat for a long time (for me usually overnight) Also driving home yesterday i put my foot down and it seemed to slip a bit. I think it hasn't been properly filled (with the engine running) so i will try topping it up tomorrow, but i wondered if anyone else has had a problem like this and if it is a symptom of low fluid. Thanks As a side note it has no warning lights and drives perfectly fine (apart from the one little slip it did) after it's spent a few mins warming up

For sure you should check your fluid level. I think these transmissions are actually pretty good.

I agree this is a fluid level issue. And from I’ve read and been told by a number of trusted sources (Rover techs) these transmissions are very stout. They shift for crap, can’t decide what gear to be in, and take their time in general getting into a gear, but they are plenty strong and can take a good bit of abuse. Clean fluid- and enough of it- and a fresh filter will keep one going for a long time.

I have never had an issue with these transmissions (but it could happen). They are probably the best designed part of the disco. Check to see if the controller plug is loose. You have to 'top it off' while running, and going through the gears on a lift.......

Thanks for all of your responses and im going to work on the truck in the next few days to try and fix it and will put an update on with my results
Also from some research I found the the gearbox should take dextron 3? I kinda hope it does as I have some left over from a fluid change I did on an automatic Volvo 850

Thanks again for your replies I was worried that its problem is a early sign of wear as the new box is 2nd hand

HP22 & HP24 are very reliable transmissions. Like others have said check your fluid level. A lot of places don't know how to check it properly on a D2.

How do you do it properly?

From memory, vehicle running, shift through all the gears, leave it running and in park. Remove the fill plug on the back of the transmission pan and fill it until the fluid runs out.

I follow this when I do my fluid change every 30k miles. In addition I flush the transmission by replacing the fluid, drive around the block a few times and then drain it. For the final refill I add a bottle of Lucas.
