d2 head gasket- can see failure?
update: no impression markings on bottom of head gasket from slipped liners. the metal rings on gasket are smooth and all there for all cylinders on left bank.
but i do have that tapping noise chronic...so maybe now im thinking oil pump gears and bearings.
before i tore apart engine i forgot to do an oil pressure test...but i never got low oil pressure light 6-7 psi. so it must be above that.

Did you have any blue smoke while driving the truck? Could low compression in 5 be worn rings on that cylinder? If so could you fill that cylinder with water to see if it leaks out to test the rings?
Whatever you do - do not put water in the cylinder. If you want to check if it is a ring problem, squirt some oil in the spark plug hole and rotate the engine a few revolutions, then recheck the compression. If it increases you have a ring or cylinder problem. Never put water in a cylinder.
Buy a 4.0 engine from one of the breakers on here, or Will TIllerey, or Doc Heydary on Facebook. Swap the 4.6 internals over or just put it in and run it, almost imperceptible power difference.
