Default D2 Trailer Wiring Kit

Dear LR forum,

I need to install trailer wiring for my '03 D2. Can someone tell me what is the difference between using a universal harness kit (very cheap from auto parts store only $10) vs. buying a LR Trailer Wiring Kit (expensive at $99 and above)?
What am I giving up by not going with the LR version?

Here's the basic wiring kit: < $10

Here's the LR wiring kit: > $99

Thanks

I think you are adding some wire splicing with the universal.
lr = harness plug.
I did a universal and had to do some splicing, but it was already jacked up from po.

So that's it? For $99 more, all you save is the splicing effort?

My 01' came with the European 7 pin from the factory, I needed to change it to a 4 flat. It had a LR black converter box behind the right tail light plugged into the factory grey plug(it was defective), I was able to cut the large grey plug off of the old factory converter and splice it on to my new 15 dollar converter and wiring harness, then just plug it into the factory grey trailer plug. Worked out slick. Not sure how many of these rigs came with that LR converter??

Observing the Disco wiring diagram, I built an adapter for a common flat 4 pin trailer connector. It has worked for 2 years and gives me no problems. The adapter contains six diodes, I used 2 Amperes rated diodes, just because I had them. 3 Amperes or more rated will work equally well.

-For someone who can solder and fabricate electrical things- Put the components properly insulated in a plastic box behind the tailight and bring the 4 wire connector to the hitch area.

A plain 4 pin wiring system should not work with the Disco, as the trailer uses the same bulb filament for turn, brakes and hazard flasher. The diodes take care of routing the power from those signals to the proper trailer wires.

Here is the converter I used:
Trailer Light Converter 5 Wire To 4 Wire

It converts the split turn signal and brake lights on many European vehicles into a flat 4 connector. It uses scotch lock wire splicers. No problems for several years.

Yes, like the other posters have hinted, the issue is that the LR has separate stop and turn lights. However, you can get cheap converters :

Amazon.com: Curt 56146 SMD Trailer Wire Converter: Automotive Amazon.com: Curt 56146 SMD Trailer Wire Converter: Automotive

You still have to splice into the wiring to your lights, and find a live connection.

I used the Atlantic British converter though. Super easy installation.

I can attest to the $99 plug and play. Took me 10 minutes last night to install this and it works perfectly. To me it was well worth it.
