Default Dash pad separation

Greetings everyone, new guy here. I recently picked up a 2004 Discovery SE (74,000 miles) and while it is generally a solid vehicle, I have been addressing a few minor items such as a window regulater, throttle body heater, etc.
I noticed the Dash Pad is seperating near the windshield on both sides. It is not cracked but it does seem very dry or brittle. It is a minor anoyance, but since I noticed it I keep looking at it. This vehicle originated in Arizona and I'm inclined to think the heat just caused it to warp (and a lack of dressing to keep it pliant).
Has anyone else encountered this condition? I searched but found no history. I am considering applying a petroleum based product like WD-40 thinking that it will be absorbed and cause the material to swell and exand (like our Valve Cover gaskets do). Any ideas? Is this a common problem that everyone lives with? Thanks for your thoughts.
