Dash shows Drive - Shifter Park and wont start
Have 99 LR DII that will not start. I could not get the key out initially, but after reading some threads disconnected a solenoid and key came out, but car still does not start. All the dash lights work. The dash indicates "D", shifter is all the way forward for park, but shifter light designation shows D. What is the probelem?
Yes, broken linkage, the transmission is in drive and the shifter is in park.
Set the parking brake and choke the wheels, you will need to have a shop take care of this for you.
I have not the slightest clue as how to replace the linkage.
I bet if you put the key in the ignition and turned it to "run" and put your foot on the brake pedal you could then shift out of park.

I have read in other forums that it could be something associated with the brakes, like a fuse or something. Before this happened, I could feel a "click" on the shifter when the brake was depressed and it disengaged the locking on the shirfter allowing to shift. I do not feel that "click" anymore. If it is the shift linkage though, where would it be, a broken cable hanging from under the car or something?
The D2 uses a cable that runs from the shifter to the driver side of the transmission to shift the transmission. I think it is held in place with clips so even if it is broken it won't hang down below the vehicle but will be quite obvios if you climb under the truck.
Looking at the RAVE manual, replacing the shifter cable doesn't appear to be very difficult but definitely time consuming. Unless you are rather mechanically inclined and have some free time on your hands I would consider having a mechanic replace the cable if that is the problem.
