define service engine vs. check engine?
have the 97 disco SE. got a service eng. ligght on yesterday and did the major search to prepare for the worst... seems the "codes" i haveare not apparent when checked at the obd2 port and is an "oil change needed" type of light???? is there a check engine light that comes on seperately/also when a code is shown? or is the operator at the local autozone crazy? or AM I CRAZY???

RE: define service engine vs. check engine?
The yellow check engine light is on the left side of the dash and
is for the OBDII reader.
The red service light is on the right side ofthe dash and can be reset by
pulling of the lower kick panel on the right side floor board.
Its a little box that says emissions on top it will have a small hole if you look inside you
will see two little wires with the key on short these wires.
I did it with a very small screw driver that will re set it for the next 75K to 82K.

The Service Engine Soon is a emissions reminder, it is programmed to come on every 60,000 miles or so. Basically a predetumined amount of time set by the manufacturererererrrrerr's on the life expectancy of your O2 sensors and other emissions related devices.
It is red to scare you into taking it to the dealer.
You can easly reset it yourself, www.discoweb.org has a good write up on it in the tech section.
Or you can drive with it on.
The Check Engine Light means get the engine checked out.
If either of these lights flash stop driving the truck and get it looked at ASAP.

after you buy a disco, spend a few hours reading over these forums, you find out a lot about them, things on other cars that are major repairs, on discos might be a simple sensor, or gas cap. BUT MAKE SURE U CAN TELL THE DIFFRENCE between majors and minors.

Without off road bumpers or sliders you'll have to use the Hi-Lift Wheel Mate on the truck.

RE: define service engine vs. check engine?
I must have had the CEL and SES lights confused, and so did my dealer. He told me that the CEL light was primarily for emissions and not to worry about it. He read the code which was a bad O2 sensor and cleared it. Needless to say it came back on shortly because I haven't replaced the O2 sensor. He said the red SES light is the one to worry about and have checked as soon as it comes on.
