Default Diagnosing coolant loss. Newbie. Found a leak need to know what it is.

My discovery started to overheat this morning and I parked it and let it cool. I noticed the coolant tank was near empty so I got coolant and added it, and it ran fine.

When I went to drive a couple hours later, the temperature gauge started rising again. Pulled off and checked the fluid again and near empty after being filled up.

After it cooled down I got home and had it run to see if I could find a leak and when it was running I noticed a significant leak. Picture is attached. I'm pretty new so I'm not sure what's causing this and the appropriate remedy. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

The good news is that is your throttle body heater (and gasket.) Search in the writeups to see how to replace it. It's about $30-50 tops.

The bad news is, that might not be the sole reason for your overheating, but I'd start there because that is a major source of coolant loss for many a DII owner.

Thank you. I'll look into the part and see how it goes from there

Thanks for the heads up. That's actually right where I went after knowing what I needed. Should have it Thursday.

T/body preheater can not cause that much of a coolant leak and if you are mechanical at all, you would see coolant gushing from under the t/body from a possible broken hose.
You need to quit driving/over heating your engine before you fry it and if not mechanical, get it to a shop and have them determine what is wrong with it, get an estimate and get back to us with the cause and cost of repair so we can help you decide if they are right or screwing you.

Mike mine poured out coolant when it went bad just a few weeks ago. "I mean poured out"
Yes his hose clamps are different and you can tell someone did a half *** job when they were in there last time. That being said i would bet money that they did not prepare the area for the new gasket causing it to leak, of did not go at the 5.5 head with the right tools and stripped the bolts causing them not to get the tight enough. Could they have put a slit in the hoses going to the throttle body heater plate? Absolutely you may want to check those while your in there. But do yourself a huge favor and at whatever cost do not run your truck while your overheating.

after you replace the throttle body heater gasket your should preasure test your system for at least 15-20 minutes. Wiggling and pulling on all the other hoses and lines to check for leaks, just pumping it up to 20psi and walking way will not find a leak.
