Diagnosis
Hey guys, Before I say anything I wanted to once again say Thank-You, This forums members are incredible. Ok now the question, 2001 discovery sd V8. When I start it I hear a whiring, almost like a pump running it lasts for maybe 30-40 seconds then stops, it comes from the engine, left side I am guessing. Second noise is from the cabin, I turned everything off while I was driving but it still sounded like a small motor kind of a soft rattle coming from the area on the left of the steering wheel, like it is almost behind the air vent but the heat, air, everything is off. I can try harder to explain it if need be but I am hoping somebody can help me out as if they do not belong I want to solve any issues asap. cheers guys
Ok the sound under the hood may be your secondary air injection ... land rovers in california, new york and a few other states had these installed on them for emissions reasons.
There is also a filter inside them that needs to be replaced every now and then and when old can break off and make a lot of noise in the pump itself, it is on the passenger side of the vehicle and mounted on the firewall.
And that noise behind the dash is a small electric fan that blows air on the cabin temp sensor. You can either replace it or dab some kind of lubricant on it (thats what I do)
If you open the area under the steering wheel and look up you will see it.

thanks so much, I was able to look beside the steering wheel today and saw the vent that I think that fan is behind. You rock , glad to have somebody around who knows their stuff. cheers FZ34
Wait, the secondary air fan is attached to the right side, engine side of the fire wall, it will run for 40 seconds right after starting the engine. The sound it makes is like a vacuum cleaner.
It is not on the right side of the steering wheel.
So your description of the noise is that of secondary air fan. However, the place where you are describing it is not the place where you should hear that noise.
