Default Overheating Question: Thoughts on Diagnosis

I have 1998 Disco with 71k on the odometer. Lots of off roading.

Last week the temp gage started climbing into the red after about 15 minutes of driving. Thermostat was replaced. Same problem. Fan, pump, etc. all are working. In eight years the cooling system has never been touched (except to top off). I am guessing a clogged radiator. Thoughts?

Assuming that there are no air pockets in your system, I will agree with you and say that some of the cores/wells in your radiator are clogged and it's time to get a new one. I will put money on this one. This model year and similar have wells on the sides of the radiator that have very poor and tight circulation spots that are prone to blockage. Try http://www.performanceradiator.com/. I think they have the lowest price on the web. I have researched this topic myself and can also provide you with this past thread: https://landroverforums.com/m_13580/tm.htmJust be sure your not loosing any coolant anywhere and that your fans are in working order (electrical and clutch driven). Let me know how it all works out for you. Regards.

Have you been having to add any coolant over the last month or so?
Your possibilitys are plugged radiator, but I doubt it, head gasket, or dropped cylinder sleeve.
Usually if the radiator is starting to plug up it will happen over time and not just start overheating.

Thanks for the comments.

Funny, no coolant added in obver a year (and then it was just a top-off). Coolant at smae level it was at last December. Just changed the oil, and no sign of any coolant in the old oil. No funny noises, sounds, or lights.

The Disco will idle for hours and thee needle just sits there at the half-way mark on the temperature gauge. bu, take it out driving and after 15 minutes and 10 seconds (just like clock work) the needle starts its rise towards the red.

I am going to take a radiator core reading this weekend.

I am still leaning towards a clogged radiator. Any other thoughts?

Go to a radiator shop for a flow test and a estimate to rod out the radiator if needed.

It was a clogged radiator. Replaced with a heavy-duty brass and copper one.

Thanks for all the comments.

I bought the truck off a LR mechanic. He needed cash, and I got a DEAL! The Disco is loaded with everything except a snorkel ... that goes on over Christmas break.
