Diagnostic tool / fault code reader
Hi all...new on here so please bear with me...
I Have a 2002 Discovery 2 XS TD5 Manual
Looking to getting a fault code / diagnostic reader for it...
What options do i have...?
I'm a fairly competent mechanic and have had it a year and a half now, everything is serviced and it runs well...but i would like to get something to check it all out...
I want to keep it totally standard and have no plans to modify in the future...i mainly use it to tow my car transporter and as a family car...
I am planning to swap the front windscreen for a heated one when it eventually fails its MOT for the screen (got an advisory for chips last time so wont be long)...i understand you need to program the computer to 'activate' this feature?...
i would like to be able to give it a really good check electronically to see if there are any old error codes ...
so my first option is to just by a cheap universal code reader...but am i right in thinking all i could do is find any engine fault codes...things like the ABS and other ECU's cant be read by these cheap options...?
I have looked at the Hawk-eye system, from what people say its good but quite pricey at £300 for what it can do?...
Any other options...?
I like the idea of the live data features as i would like to monitor temperatures when towing...but it has never let me down so far so this would be more of a novelty
So can anyone point me in the right direction...
would like to ensure there are Zero fault on the whole of the car really...would like something that leaves no stone unturned for all the electrical systems in the car...anything else like live data and programming functions would be a bonus, but don't wanna spend £500 odd extra just to get my windscreen working when i could pay a dealer £50 to enable it...
Many thanks for all you comments..

Ultra Gauge, about $70 US. Reads and resets engine codes (not tranny or ABS). Dispalys live data. You customize display. Alarm points you program. Can show battery volts (OBDII port voltage) and coolant temp (raw data vs the filtered-by-ECU point at 50% from 130 - 240F foolishness).

For the same price as the hawkeye, you can get the Black Box Soutions Nanocom Evo. If I had a Td5 I wouldn't consider anything less. It will pretty much do everything they hawkeye will, but it will also re-sync computers and in the case of Td5 you can use it to upload new fuel maps, if you have (or upgrade to) the NNN computer.
I have both a hawkeye and a nanocom. I'm only holding on to the hawkeye because at some point I may buy an LR3/D3, and currently nanocom doesn't support those.... if and when it does, I'll probably sell that hawkeye or maybe loan it out.

Don't know about the land of the MOT, but in the US market the parts stores will do a free code read (to sell you more parts to throw at it). Some stores rent/loan readers, many now have corporate policy where they won't clear codes. MIL light should come on for bulb check at engine start. Over here they get disconnected, painted over, etc. There are even bluetooth adapters and low priced phone apps like Torque that will display on your smarty phone.
x 2 on the bluetooth adaptors plus smart phone apps.
Here's a $15 adaptor
Soliport ELM 327 Bluetooth OBDII OBD2 Diagnostic Scanner : Amazon.com : Automotive
and the Torque app for Android is $5. Torque — OBD2 Performance and Diagnostics for your Vehicle It also uses the phone's accelerometer and GPS to measure BHP and torque. Plus 0-60 times (as if this is a big deal for Disco owners!)
There are good reviews on-line, has anyone here tried one of these?

I have an ELM327 blutooth adapter.I leave it plugged in all the time and when ever I want/need to check my discos temp I just pull out my phone. With the torque app you can see n clear pending/current faults.Works like a charm all the time.
I also have the ELM and Torque running on an Droid 3 I bought for $40. I have multiple gauge layouts running. It can read / clear codes, monitor live data (limited by refresh speed) and view your readiness monitor status among other things. Great tool. I have it mounted on my windshield and have it set up to come on when the truck is running (koeo) and sleep when I shut it down.
I just got a used '01 Disco II, and am interested in this ELM327 Bluetooth device, but I can't seem to locate any suitable app for my iPhone! Can someone point me in the right direction? iTunes or Apple App Store are so hard to search for a specific item!
/hug apple.
You're out of luck. It won't work with the bluetooth adapter. They do however, make one that works with a wifi obd2 adapter for similar money.
Blessing and a curse, the iTunes store...
Honestly, the Ultragauge is like $70. You'll spend in the range of $50 for the wifi obd2 adapter and the software -- and will have to pull your phone out all the time and start the app.
I've got an android with torque and bluetooth, and the ultragauge. For the money, the ultragauge can stay in the truck and alarm nicely if it starts to overheat. You -know- the first time it overheats you'll have not started the app on your phone...

and you'll need one of these ELM 327 OBD-II WiFi:
Amazon.com: Elm327 WIFI Wirless OBD2 Car Diagnostic Reader Scanner Scan Tool for Iphone iPad iOS PC: MP3 Players & Accessories
Wi Fi Elm 327 OBD 2 II Car Diagnostic Interface Scanner US | eBay
Be sure it's the Wifi one, not the bluetooth, cheaper ones.
