Did I overfill my oil?? Help please.
This is the 1st time changing my oil...I guess I overfilled it, see the picture.
My steps:
1. Drained oil until no more was dripping out, reinserted plug.
2. Removed old filter, partially filled new oil filter, and inserted.
3. Put in a total of 5.75 quarts (including amount in filter).
4. Ran engine, revved it.
But the oil line is WAY over the fill point. What gives?
The only thing I can think I did wrong was the truck was not warm. I had moved it from the driveway into the garage about an hour earlier.
Also, the oil on the dipstick got way darker after I revved the engine. Is that NORMAL?
Should I pull the drain plug or what?
p.s. I used Mobil 1 oil and a 301-1 filter. (1st time block has seen synthetic)

Not sure how many people really follow the procedure to the "T", but Land Rover states that you are to drain the oil, then refill the oil to full as indicated on the dipstick. THEN, remove the oil filter and install new filter. 2 separate procedures, done in sequence. I also fill the new filter about half-full and oil the gasket at the top before spinning it on.
Just FYI. Out of curiosity, how many people were actually aware of this and follow the procedure as outlined in the RAVE manual?

To the OP how far over the full line are you? Did you warm up the oil first? There is a big difference in how much oil you get out depending if the oil is cold or warm. You get out about a quart more out when hot. If you drained out hot oil then 5.75 quarts is correct. Do yourself a favor read the dipstick in the morning when cold or after the truck has sat for a few hours, after the first couple tries the oil gets up in the dip stick tube and gets hard to read properly.

bingo. i'm a freakin idiot.
good news: i have now have fresh tranny and motor oil.
i'm at 52k, so it was almost time for gear oil anyway.
hey, live and learn. ran the truck hard down the road. everything seems fine. no leaks, etc.
AT LEAST I DIDNT POUR ATF IN THE MOTOR OR VICE VERSA! hah.
