The diesel motor that will be used is Mahindra's new mHawk motor, a 2.2-liter I-4 turbodiesel, which delivers around 150 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, 5000lb. towing capacity, 2,765lb. carrying capacity. 28-30 MPG....insane.

We have a 2005 Volvo S40 that gets 33mph ....imagine that in a LR...A TDI 200 Disco can do that... DI though... I am doing my own....

 

To do a diesel swap ($5,000 - $10,000 is the price range I have heard doing all the work yourself ofcourse) you would have to drive your discovery 40,000 miles a year for almost 3 years just to break even. I used mild numbers to do the math here, it goes like this:

1. Regular disco: 40,000 miles divided by 15 mpg, multiply by $3 bucks = $8000

2. Diesel conversion: I went in the middle with $7500

3. Diesel disco: 40,000 miles divided by 30 mpg, multiply by $4 bucks = $5333

4. Regular disco fuel price minus diesel disco fuel price = $2667 (fuel savings per year)

5. Diesel conversion $7500 divided by fuels savings per year $2667 = 2.8 years

After 2.8 years you finally start seeing some return on your investment, if you are going to do it it's not going to be for the savings.

 

ok , your figures are almost correct except diesel where i live is $2.76 a gallon. My local Bio diesel is $1.75 a gallon and my "free WVO" from my friend that owns 2 resturants....chinese....is free...

I bought a doner DI.... i bought today for $500.00..without engine and tranny...i havent made my mind yet on the 95 or 96 he has both really nice....

My TDI 200 with all parts is going to be about $2,600.00 landed in miami.

Thats engine, tranny, transfer case, wiring harnes and all parts need for conversion.

I will also have the block rebuilt for about a grand so it will be about new so i am under $5,000.00 for all. I of course will be refinishing a few other things but it will be how i like it. And doing my part to get off the grid, stop funding the middel east and help save whats left of the planet...small part but it works for me as well as a expedition class truck when i am done...

 

Using your numbers it would be stupid to do the conversion if you were going to get rid of the disco in 3-5 years. But what if you kept it for 10+ years. Now you are talking serious savings as the diesel will go far longer than the gas engine. Say you put 10-15K per year on your disco and you swap in a TDI with 100,000 miles on it and run it to 300-350K. I don't know about you but that doesn't seem like it is such a waste at that point. Plus I would argue that the TDI has some advantages off road (especially when wading). Not saying you are wrong just playing devil's advocate here. It is not a cheap swap by any means but not completely worthless.

It is a Mercedes TD5, I have the exact same engine in my Sprinter.
172,000 miles and the engine blew up, $12,000 later my van was running again.
Mercedes, during their Mopar years, had the lowest quality rating of any car, including domestics.

 

These aren't my numbers, this is just what I have heard on this board (from Vandev I might add), I have done a little bit of research on my own, but not actually getting prices. These are of course my local fuel prices, $3 for brand name premium, $4 for brand name diesel. I also didn't mean to say that a diesel conversion is stupid, hell no, not even remotely stupid, I want one so bad I can taste it. All I am saying is that you don't do a diesel conversion to save money.
